The Fisherman's Studio

The Fisherman's Studio was first conceived back in 1975, as part of the Heron Outdoors Training Centre in Eastern England.

The concept then was to develop better clothing and equipment, and create television programs about fishing, and the Great Outdoors. It also created special events and demonstrations, as well as briefing government agencies about the needs and plight of fishermen, commercial and sport.

In 2008 the Fisherman's Studio concept was relaunched, this time to develop multimedia, marketing and training materials for the US and global audience, and again to look at the clothing and equipment for fishermen.

With so many serious issues facing the commercial and leisure fisherman there is a desperate need to develop the best visual images of the Fisherman, his equipment and his ability to be a successful partner in conserving and improving the dwindling marine resources.

The Heron Range of Clothing

Home of the Fisherman's Studio and based on the Heron Outdoors Training Centre we created back in the 1970's in rural Beccles, Suffolk a beautiful unspoiled English village surrounded by some of the most idillic lanscape in England. Today we are based in the similarly beautiful Delmarva Penisula on the Chesapeake Bay.

The desire then was to create a design and training resource for the development of equipment and education around the fishing and tourism that drove the economy of the region. The Center had it's own Survival School for those who dared face the unpredictable conditions of the North Sea. For those who prefered to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Banks of the River Waveney we had fishing and development and production of sports clothing. The down jacket we produced was seen in the British Comedy "To the Manor Born" worn by Penelope Keith.

Today we pick up where we left off and again are developing education, training and an infectious passion for enjoying the outdoors, before we destroy everything that is natural and beautiful in the name of progress.

The logo by the way was developed by a local Beccles Artist back in the 1970's.

High School Fishing

A new curriculum is being introduced, or discussed at hundreds of High Schools and Colleges across the United States, Fishing.

For a generation that believes in Wii and endless video games, text messaging and only sees the outdoors in a computer screen the challenges and learning experiences of fishing are being discovered. The fact that they have been known for tens of thousands of years, and once Father and Son fishing trips were the norm speaks volumes about our social decline.

The Fisherman's Studio is looking into the best curriculum and the many layers of learning and competition.

The Chesapeake Bay

As an indictment on greed, and lack of understanding of our ecosystems the Chesapeake Bay was declared a Marine Disaster again, this time for the Blue Crab population.

The tasty once abundant crabs have all but disappeared in many areas of the Bay, following the fish and Oyster beds.

Now is the time to start bringing the next generations into the loop, and before we totally destroy the marine life on the planet have them work towards halting the catastrophic collapse of many ecosystems.

Understanding fishing is understanding our relationship with that ecosystem. Every community has a water area where fish can survive, and schools can bring classes. Every State has Fishing Tournaments and before we destroy the major fishing areas, such as the Chesapeake Bay maybe we can develop National Fishing Leagues with the same funding that the other sports leagues have. The by product would be salvation of our marine areas, for they would be too valuable to destroy through neglect!

From Bait to Plate

The Chef's Studio is working with the Heron Outdoors Training Center to develop a better understanding of preparing and cooking fish.
